Questions people ask

How is an estate divided in Islam?+

First the funeral costs, then debts, then any bequest (max one third, not to an heir). Then the Quranic fixed shares are given, and the rest goes to the residuary heirs (asaba). If the shares exceed the estate they are reduced proportionally ('awl); if a surplus remains with no residuary, it returns to the heirs except the spouse (radd).

Why does a son get twice a daughter's share?+

Because of the verse "Allah instructs you concerning your children: for the male, what is equal to the share of two females" (an-Nisa 4:11). The man carries the duty to pay the mahr and support the family.

Is this calculator official?+

No. It is an explanatory tool following the majority view and the Hanbali school used in Saudi Arabia. The official list of heirs (hasr al-warathah) and binding division are done through the court and the Najiz platform.

Which cases are not covered?+

A grandfather together with siblings (muqasama), distant kindred, unborn or missing heirs, and heirs who died after the deceased (munasakhat). Ask the court in these cases.
